娘は言った　ああ、私はどこにいるの？

こんなつらい目にあったのは生まれて初めてだわ

あの船乗りは私の代わりに自分の恋人を船に乗せたかったのよ

そして　激しく泣いた

船長は船乗りのところへ行き　首ねっこをつかまえて

海に放り投げ　こう言った

その水を飲め！　それとも少し酒を飲むか？

おまえの恋人の健康を祝して　乾杯するがいい！

彼らは東に西にと波にゆられながら　ついに憧れの国に辿り着いた

風は強く波は荒れていたが　乗客全員が無事に到着した

彼らは３年と４か月　カレドニアで一緒に過ごした

船長は彼女のために　素敵なシルクとサテンのドレスを作った

そして今では彼女は船長の妻である

カレドニアとは、アイルランドからスコッツ族が移住してくる以前のスコットランドの古い呼び名（ラテン語）です。

憧れの国、カレドニアを目指す娘が様々な困難に遭いながらも、最後には無事に到着し船長と結ばれるという、ハッピーエンドの内容で、ほっとします。

歌詞はJohn Ordという人の｢Bothy songs and Ballads｣に収録されています。

この曲を歌っている私の大好きなアーティスト、Susan Mckeownの「Sweet Liberty」というアルバムのライナーノーツによれば、作曲はTony Cuffeという今は亡き男性トラッドシンガーで、Suzanは生前の彼から直接この歌を習ったとあります。
